French edition of John Mitchell's highly important and influential map of North America, which was first published in 1755. The large scale and fine engraving of this issue make it worthy of the original. The Mitchell map was the one used in framing the Treaty of Peace between the United States and Great Britain signed on September 3, 1783, and it is considered by the Dictionary of American Biography as "the most important map in American History." As described by Cummings, Mitchell's map covers the seaboard of North America from southern Labrador to Newfoundland, to Florida and Texas, and extends to what is now Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Though rich in topographical, hydrographic, and settlement detail, it was to have its greatest impact as a political map illustrating the many boundaries dividing the land that would soon be in heated contest, first by Europe's great imperial powers and their Red allies, and then by Britain's disaffected and rebellious colonists... Mitchell's map met with a very favorable reception in England as well as on the continent of Europe and in the American colonies. A surprisingly large number of editions and plagiarisms of it were issued over a period of three or more decades.." (See Cummings 293). The present issued may be identified in part by the addition of "A. German-Town, Carré. M. 28" south of Long Island. With large inset of Hudson's Bay in upper left.
