Title: 'AMERICA TRUE INDIA NOVA ad magna Gerardi Mercatoris aui Vniversalis imitationem in compendi. Um redacta'. French text on verso.
A copperplate full hand coloured map of American continent. The map's geography is based on the appropriate portions of Rumold Mercator's 1569 world map.
The central hemisphere, which is a general map of the two continents, is surrounded by exquisite mannerist decoration, and four roundels which contain the titles (lower right) and three insets of parts of North America: the western shores of the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and Florida, and Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.
It shows a north-west passage.
In very good condition. Little soiling and flatted crimp folds left of centerfold with some minor thinning of paper. Some small area in lower margin reinstalled.
