Sebastian Cabot's "World Map of A.D. 1544"
A rare nineteenth century reproduction of Sebastian Cabot's world map. The map folds out from a hardcover jacket, and is printed on linen.
The bottom of map has the following text: "Reduced by photograph to little less than half size From a negative taken from the original at Paris
by order of the Minister of Agriculture and Statistics"
There is an additional portrait of Sebastian Cabot. On bottom of portrait it says:
"From the original formerly in the possession of Charles Joseph Harford, Esq of Stapleton in the county of Gloucester. This painting afterwards became the property of Mr. Richard Biddle, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was destroyed by fire at his residence"
The map is in very good condition, no rips or tears, only minor creases in the linen. Overall minor toning.
The red of the book jacket has bled through on the top left corner, but the jacket condition is good with some black marks on the spine and along the back.
