A detailed map of the Duchy of Brabant with north to the right margin. This is a depiction of the province before its division in 1648 and is in essence the territory bounded by the river Maas (Meuse) from Namur in the south to its estuary. The Maas, until 1648, marked the Western border of the Holy Roman Empire from its creation in the 9th century.
This engraving is taken from a plate from the 1696 edition of P van der Slart's 'Theatrum Belgii Foederati' with minor alterations. Slart's map was printed from the same plate of the 1635 ed. of 'Vyerighe Colom' by Jacob Aertsz Colom.
